The pictured Simonopetra Monastery is a fascinating and impressive monastery on the Holy Mountain of Athos. The so-called "Holy Mountain" is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a place of great spiritual significance for Orthodox Christianity. For 2000 years, the monks of the 20 Orthodox monasteries have protected Mount Athos from pollution and exploitation, preserving the flora and fauna as God created them.
