STORY

You may be wondering how our fashion label got its name, ANTIOCHIA. This ancient, historic city is our family’s hometown and holds a special place in the history of the Christian faith. To us, it is much more than just a city. Every visit has reminded us of the importance of openness and love of neighbour. These are the values we want to share with you and the world.

Antiochia was a city in ancient Syria. During the Roman Empire, it was one of the largest and most important cities in the eastern Mediterranean, alongside Alexandria and Constantinople, now Istanbul. Its beauty earned it the name “Queen of the Orient”.

In AD 526, Antiochia was struck by a devastating earthquake that destroyed much of the city. In February 2023, powerful earthquakes struck the region once again. Antakya was also devastated, and countless people lost their lives or their homes.

Today, the city is called Antakya and lies in Turkey’s Hatay province. Reflecting its history, both Turkish and Arabic are still spoken there.

Did you know? Antiochia had the world’s first illuminated street.

CHRISTIANITY

A look at the beginnings of Christianity reveals the city’s significance. St. Peter’s Grotto, located on a hillside just outside the city, was declared the oldest church in Christendom by the Vatican and, according to legend, was consecrated by the Apostle Peter.

According to biblical tradition, the first Christian community gathered here around the apostles Paul, Barnabas and Peter.

“The disciples were first called Christians in Antiochia.” — Acts 11:26

From Antiochia, the apostles carried the message of Jesus into the world.

TODAY

The province of Hatay is known in Turkish as “Medeniyetler şehri”, meaning “the city of civilisations”. This reflects the region’s long history of cultural and religious diversity, shaped by Christianity, Judaism and Islam.

For us, Antiochia stands for openness, peaceful coexistence and love of neighbour. These values remain close to our hearts, especially after the devastating earthquakes of February 2023.

What makes the region special:

  • Religious sites that tell the story of its faith traditions
  • Ancient mosaics bearing witness to its cultural heritage
  • Rich culinary traditions, from varied appetisers to the famous dessert künefe
  • The Museum Hotel: Modern architecture meets ancient ruins and mosaics.
