Antioch was a city in ancient Syria. During the time of the Roman Empire it was one of the largest and most important cities in the eastern Mediterranean, next to the Egyptian Alexandria and Constantinople (today Istanbul). Once it was called "Queen of the Orient" because of its beauty. In 526 after Christ, a heavy earthquake shook the city and killed at least 250'000 people. Almost all buildings were destroyed.
Today the city is called Antakya and is located in the Turkish province of Hatay. Due to the historical development, Arabic is still spoken in addition to Turkish.
Did you know?
Antioch had the first illuminated street in the world.
A review of the beginnings of Christianity gives an idea of the high importance of the city. The Church of Saint Peter, which is located on a mountain slope just outside the city, was declared by the Vatican to be the oldest church in Christianity and according to the legend, it was consecrated by the Apostle Peter.
According to biblical tradition, the first Christian community gathered here around the apostles Paul, Barnabas and Peter.
"The disciples were first called Christians in Antiochia.“
Acts of the Apostles 11,26
Starting from Antiochia, the message of Jesus was carried into the world by the apostles.
The province Hatay is called today in Turkish "Medeniyetler şehri". Translated into english this means: "The city of civilization". This is due to the fact that people from the three major world religions of Christianity, Judaism and Islam, live here peacefully and harmoniously together.
